WAYNE RICH VICTORIOUS AT TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS SHAPE-OFF
Event honored legendary shaper Renny Yater; Carl Ekstrom’s asymmetrical wins ‘Best of Show’.

Encinitas, Ca. (April 13, 2010) — – It was a Masters weekend in more ways than one. A humble and emotional Wayne Rich took top honors at the
Sacred Craft Expo’s “Tribute to the Masters Shape-off” competition honoring Renny
Yater presented by US Blanks. The competition was part of the two-day Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo.
“I’m so stoked and humbled, and just thrilled,”
said Rich, as his voice filled with emotion. “This man (Renny Yater) is a
like a father figure to many of us, and to compete against these great shapers
is a very, very big honor. I worked next to Renny for a long time, and perhaps
some of that Yater mojo actually did wear off on me!”
Six shapers including Rich, Todd Proctor, Michel Junod, Nick
Palandrani, Matt Moore and Dennis Ryder each replicated a classic Yater Spoon.
Renny Yater, his son Lauren and Marc Andreini spent an hour judging the six
shaped blanks and then announced Wayne Rich as the winner.
Rich’s name will be inscribed next to 2X winner Ricky
Carroll (Diffenderfer, Caster) and Pat Rawson (Brewer) on the “Tribute to the
Masters Mike Marshall Trophy”. Rich also pocketed $1000 for his victory.
Carl Ekstrom’s 5′ 8″ Asymmetrical Quad/Keel won Sacred Craft’s “Best of Show” award. Sacred Craft honors one
surfboard shaper/designer/manufacturer with the Best of Show award for a
surfboard that uses cutting edge technology and/or outside-of-the-box design
concepts. Ekstrom’s masterpiece was chosen slightly ahead of Danny Hess’s wood
perimeter/EPS constructed quad. Ekstrom was awarded a complimentary booth at
the next Sacred Craft Expo.
Later this week, one lucky winner will receive 7days/6 nights at Joyos G-Land
Surf Camp. Another winner will receive a new surfboard. The winning
announcement will take place on the TansworldSURF website on Friday April 16.
